Paragliding in St-André-les-Alpes: the Verdon's reliable engine

St-André-les-Alpes doesn't look like much when you drive through: a quiet Provençal village where the Verdon river slows into the Lac de Castillon, halfway between Digne and the Gorges du Verdon. Then you notice the sky. On almost any decent day between March and October, there are gliders over the Chalvet — and not just a few. St-André is one of the busiest free-flight villages in France, home to schools, comps, and a community that flies more days per year than nearly anywhere else in the Alps.

The reason is a happy accident of geography: high-Provence sun, a mountain positioned perfectly against the daily valley-wind system, and a landing zone you could see from space. Here's how the site works and how to fly it well.

TL;DR Main launch on Le Chalvet (~1,600 m), south/southwest-facing above the village. Big official landing by the lake (~900 m). The Verdon valley wind blows up-valley from the south through the flying day and drives everything. Best months: April to October. Watch the strong mid-afternoon window in summer, and know the lake-breeze interaction. One of France's most dependable XC sites.

Why St-André works so well

Three things line up. First, Provence-grade sun: the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence get some of the highest flyable-day counts in France — the air is dry, the ground is rocky and hot, and spring comes early. Second, the Chalvet's orientation: its working faces look south and southwest, straight into both the midday sun and the up-valley breeze. Third, the Verdon valley-wind system: the deep valley running north from the Mediterranean plateau pumps a reliable south wind up past the village every warm afternoon, feeding the Chalvet's slopes with an endless supply of organised air.

The result is the same thing that makes Organyà famous: predictability. The house thermals cycle where they cycled yesterday. The breeze arrives on schedule. Schools operate here for exactly this reason — and so do XC pilots chasing 100+ km lines along the pre-Alpine ridges.

The launch: Le Chalvet

The main launch sits high on the Chalvet's shoulder at roughly 1,600 m, accessed by a winding road from the village (shuttle services run in season). Two main takeoff areas cover south through west orientations, both grassy and generous.

The house thermal off the sunny spine right of launch is marked by gliders from mid-morning onward. Getting above the Chalvet summit opens the ridge system behind — the gateway to every XC line the site offers.

The landing

The official landing field sits between the village and the Lac de Castillon — big, flat, unmistakable, with a windsock and an established circuit. Two things to respect:

As always in busy sites: the field is shared with schools and tandems all day. Fly the published circuit, announce yourself by flying predictably, and keep scanning.

The two weather patterns that kill the day: Mistral — a hard north/northwest flow that turns the whole valley system into rotor and wind-shadow chaos; and strong southerly gradient stacking on top of the valley wind, making the afternoon breeze too strong to land comfortably. Both are visible on the forecast the night before. Check wind aloft, not just the launch webcam.

The signature phenomenon to understand is the convergence that sets up along the ridges when the Verdon valley wind meets air from the neighbouring valleys — on the right day it draws a reliable lift line you can run for tens of kilometres. Airspace and rules, briefly

The St-André area is FFVL-managed with marked launch and landing zones and posted local rules — the schools and the local club are the authority, and a first-visit briefing is easy to get. Airspace-wise, the area sits under sector ceilings that vary, and military training areas (RTBA network) crisscross the southern Alps with activation schedules — a real factor on big-altitude XC days. Check current charts and RTBA activation before any long flight rather than trusting a blog post (including this one).

Reading the forecast for St-André

St-André is deep in AROME's home terrain — the 1.3 km model resolves the Chalvet, the Verdon valley and the lake as real features. What to look at:

  1. Wind aloft (2,000–3,500 m). The decision number. Light gradient = the valley-wind machine runs clean. Any Mistral signature (N/NW above 20 km/h aloft) = stand down or expect a rough, shut-down day.
  2. Valley wind strength through the afternoon. If the forecast shows the southerly breeze stacking past ~25 km/h at valley level by 16h, plan to land early or fly the morning window.
  3. Thermal strength and the daily cycle. The daily cycle here is textbook Provence: crisp switch-on, strong peak, long soft evening. Match your plan to the window you actually want.
  4. Convergence. Check where the valley-wind convergence sets up along the spines — that's the day's XC highway when it appears.
